Accidental after-show conversation with Mika Lammassaari from Mors Subita on evolution of personal style, the perception of music and why to go on writing albums. We also spoke of the soon-to-be-released album "Origin Of Fire" and the release tour.
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing Knife at the Rock & Metal Day'z festival. I had a little chat with singer Vince Nihil and he mentioned the "soon to be released" new album. The wild speed metal performance of Knife convinced me quite a lot, so here it is, the review of "Heaven Into Dust", to be released on 25th August 2023.
The line-up this year was limited to “real” metal, nothing else. I like some fun stuff in between too, but this Party.San line-up was like going back to my youth, a lot of Death Metal. It was a pleasure to see Obituary and Hypocrisy having a headliner spot with an awesome sound, and not just in the afternoon. The sound, by the way, was really great in general. And it was fantastic to see many Death and some Black Metal bands. Some of which I ‘ve never had the chance of seeing before, and now all of them just one after the other.
On August 18th, Iceland’s metal giants Skálmöld will release their sixth studio album, “Ýdalir”. It is their first album in five years and is inspired by several Icelandic sagas and Norse mythology, such as the poem Grímnismál. So you can call it a concept album. On the same day Skálmöld will perform at the Summer Breeze Open Air in Germany.
Summer Breeze Open Air, short SBOA or Breeze, is in sight. Last year showed two faces, sun and rain. Rain meant 32 hours of constant rain on very dry and hard ground. Thus a part of campground, the infield, T-Square and Battlefield were covered with a slippery mud. After the weather disaster of Wacken, this year all metalheads hope for better conditions on this Franconian Metal Festival.
SETYØURSAILS is a really interesting, promising and fresh band of four sympathetic musicians with a very impressive second album after their already powerful debut with “Enough” in 2018. Jules Mitch’s unique vocal style and personality surely dominates and carries the sound of both albums.
Early July 2023, the metal community has already seen the first festivals this year, small ones like RMD’z at Oschersleben, or mid sized like Metal Frenzy Festival, Gardelegen in Germany or Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium and many more with Rock Harz Festival in plain sight. This year marks the 30th anniversary and promises the best line-up ever with some surprise acts for about 25.000 spectators.
What makes a good festival? The crew behind the scenes! Meet the M.I.S.E. Heavy Metal Club. Let me introduces you to the crew behind the M.I.S.E. Open Air, a chilled metal festival from fans for fans.
After a long wait the progressive black metal eccentrics Dødheimsgard are back with an LP titled “Black Medium Current”. It is great to see the band consistently putting out great music even after almost thirty years of existence. It can be a bit much to take in at a first listen, however, repeated listens are rewarding - which is kind of what prog-metal music-nerds who write and read reviews like this seek anyway… So kick back and dive into this monumental piece of blackened/progressive metal art.
