Evil Obsession Tour
Concert report by DermimBoad
Some people would suggest that the time between the Christmas holidays and New Years Eve should be a time to relax. Well, obviously Sodom, Knife, Imha Tarikat and Soulburn didn’t think so. With four gigs from 27th through 30th December they decided that their fans had had enough quiet days of spending time with their family. No more filling their stomachs and hanging out on their sofas. And they were absolutely right. On 29th December I headed to Eventhall Airport Obertraubling near Regensburg to see Sodom. They had announced a special old school set going back to the 80s and early 90s.
Eventhall Airport
The venue Eventhall Airport is located a few kilometers from Regensburg, Bavaria and can hold up to 2.000 people. It’s one of only a few locations in the area, where you can find a range of metal concerts in regular intervals. Located in an industrial area there are enough parking lots and it is possible to get there by train and bus as well.
Speaking of public transportation… Thanks to delays we got there a bit late and found that, even though the beginning of the concert was announced for 19:00 the first band Soulburn had already started to play.
Soulburn
I really regretted coming late for Soulburn from the Netherlands. Not having listened to them before the show, I was positively surprised to find them playing a good mixture of Black, Death and Doom Metal, which was just to my taste. At that time the venue was still filling, but nevertheless the audience started to warm up for the evening. While we were listening and enjoying the show my companion and I found that some elements in their music reminded us of Asphyx, a band we loved, only to find out later that some members actually had played for them in the 90s. If you are into that genre, you really should see them.
Imha Tarikat
After a short break Imha Tarikat, a German Black Metal band, entered the stage. Describing their sound is quite tricky. It is very raw and brutal, especially with regard to Ruhsuz Cellât’s angry shouting, while you can find very melodious guitar parts in the excellent instrumental work. A really interesting combination which also seemed to be to the liking of the crowd who now got more active.
Knife
Again there was only time for a cigarette, a fresh beer and a bathroom visit before Knife started their show. The quite young band (founded in 2019) from Marburg, Germany needed no warming-up and went full speed. And so did the crowd who now started to freak out. Very fast Speed Metal, sounding like fresh from the 90s, was the ultimate tool to get the crowd started for Sodom, who most people probably had come for, at least according to the many t-shirts in the audience. Knife had an awesome gig and I’m still amazed about their live performance considering that they only had about two years of touring so far. If I hadn’t known, I would have thought they had been around since the 90s.
Sodom
Now it was time for the band I had come for in particular. Of course, setting up the stage took a bit longer now, but after Knife it was a good chance to come down a bit. Two huge pictures showing the deceased former drummer Chris Witchhunter now flanked the stage. It got us in the mood for what was to come, a set of songs from 1982 to 1992. And that was what we got. Vocalist Tom Angelripper seemed in a very good mood having some fun with the audience and then they started their old-school set, classic Thrash Metal at its best.
Sound and light were really good. The audience immediately started to celebrate one of the German Thrash Big Four, including moshpits, shout-alongs and one or two crowdsurfers. It was really nice to see that Sodom are still not forgotten, with an audience aged from 16 to (probably) 70 who enjoyed music from “ages ago”. After about 70 minutes the end was near and I was still waiting for some of my personal favourites from back then. And I was not disappointed. “Bombenhagel”, “Ausgebombt” and even “Wachturm” followed.
All in all it was a great show and it was especially great to see the Airport almost full. Unfortunately we had to hurry afterwards to get an again delayed train.
