– Lügen und Legenden –
Some years ago I enjoyed Lord of the Lost during their ensemble tour with an acoustic set. Now it is time again for such an experience, this time with Subway to Sally on stage. So this review is a little bit like “Metal in a Different Garment Part II” Thus, as announced a few days ago, here is our concert review!
Sold out of course
On this sunny, warm Friday afternoon, I make my way to today’s show at Kammgarn Casino in Kaiserslautern. Just 25 tickets were left a few days ago, and of course the venue is sold out tonight. Located in a former spinning mill’s power station, the venue has its own ancient industrial flair.
The people behind the curtain
I have a little time before the 20:00 show starts, so I wander around. It’s always nice to chat with the people who make each venue and concert possible: the security, stewards and merch crew. They are the people who make all our concerts possible, taking care of you and your security, and helping you in case of problems. Be nice to them — they deserve it more than anyone else.
Are you ready now?
Now, let’s talk about tonight’s band. Hailing from Potsdam to the Palatinate, please welcome German folk metal veterans Subway to Sally, led by the charismatic Eric Fish. They will perform metal in a different garment because the tour’s theme is ‘Nackt – Lügen und Legenden’, which translates as ‘Naked – Lies and Legends’. We will enjoy a “naked” acoustic set and tales from the band’s long history. Take a look at the naked stage – it looks amazing!
Shivers and goosebumps
At 20:00, the lights dim and Ingo Hampf joins the stage with his mandolin for the atmospheric intro, slowly followed by the other band members. The intro gives you shivers and goosebumps – it fits the theme of ‘Nackt’/’naked’. Ally Storch is wearing a striking red dress. I have no idea how she can move in it, but it looks fabulous. They sit down and continue with ‘Feuerkind’ and ‘Eisregen’. The tour is still ongoing, so I won’t give away the whole set list, but I can tell you that this might be my only hint. Rest assured, you will hear and see all the songs you would expect to.

Set list? What Set list?
This set list is long, so Subway to Sally will play for 150 minutes, with a 20-minute break after 60 minutes. It’s better like this than having a constant come and go, because the show is far too impressive to miss a single minute.

Safety first!
At a sold-out venue, it is often difficult to find a good spot with an acceptable view. Of course, some guests try to find a spot on the stairs leading to the grandstand. There is a very patient and super friendly security guard placed for good reason. The stairs need to be kept clear for safety reasons. I’m not sure how often he has to explain this, but I bet he’ll have a sore throat the next day.

Diverse Audience rules
As for the guests, it’s great to see such a diverse audience of all ages, genders and hair colours. Metalheads in battle vests and everyone else are all together celebrating a party with an amazing band. That’s how metal should be, even if you can’t hear any brutal power chords tonight.

Tales from the past
As usual, Eric Fish is very talkative, telling stories about almost every song and the band’s history, as well as tales of lies and legends from the past.

One last hint
After ‘Veitztanz’, it’s time for the audience to sing along until Subway to Sally return for the encores. But before I reveal too much about the songs, let the photos do the talking. I’ll just mention the human raven on stage during a particular song, but I won’t tell you which one – I guess you’ll recognise it anyway. Enjoy the photos of a great show by a great band in a completely different garment – Nackt – for the third time in more than 35 years.

That was impressive
I loved the atmosphere and the interaction between the band and the audience, who sang along to most of the songs and sometimes took over the lead vocals. No one needed to be asked to raise their hands or voices; it all came naturally as a sign of love, friendship, and joy.

More Subway to Sally
If you can’t get enough of Subway to Sally or regularly attend festivals, check out the band’s website for details of their festival performances, starting with MPS Rastede on 16th May and ending with Plague Noir at Weissenhäuser Strand on 20th November, as well as the few Post Mortem Tour dates in early October.
And, of course, we mustn’t forget to mention the legendary Eisheilige Nacht Tour. Traditionally starting at Z7 Pratteln in Switzerland on 11th December, this tour will finish at Waschhaus Arena Potsdam on 30th December, just one day before New Year’s Eve. Subway to Sally will be joined by Fiddler’s Green, Manntra and Saint City Orchestra.
