SETYØURSAILS
Some weeks, or better months ago, I stumbled over a very interesting band named SETYØURSAILS as support act of Lord Of The Lost. I first thought, they would be kind of “Pirate-Metal” but failed… They are much more at home at Melodic Metalcore. After the show I spoke with vocalist Jules and promised her to review their recent album “Nightfall”, although already released in early2022. Time and work overload took their toll but here it finally is.
Nightfall
Ghosts
The opener features none less than Rudi Schwarzer of Annisokay as additional guest vocalist. Very catchy chorus, harsh lead vocals and an aggressive hook paired with sweet clean interludes make it a perfect appetizer for more.
Nightfall
The second song also includes a guest musician, this time Andy Dörner, vocalist of Caliban. It starts with a powerful guitar riff, continued by Jules’ clean and innocent vocals mixed with explosive growls.
Secrets
Piano sound opens the next song, is this a ballad? No, it is not, and yes it is. Piano and drums carry it away into a world of guitars, clean vocals and growls full of secrets.
Why
I remember, when I was young, there was a song of the Kelly Family with the same title. That’s all they have in common. The fourth track starts with a brutal guitar intro and Jules spits out all aggression of the world to return to her incredible sweet clean vocals just to kick your butt again. Perfect!
Mirror
Spherical keyboard sound, drums, a thundering guitar and the mix of clean, harsh and slightly distorted vocals push this track through the waves of sound just to fade away after barely three minutes.
Into The Storm
I’m not sure if I hear machine gun volleys at the beginning but they are overtaken by a crashing in guitar anyway. Drums, guitar and bass race to compete and are only stopped by the outrageous powerful vocals.
Anchor
Who doesn’t need an anchor from time to time? This little piece comes along in such troubled quiet manner that you just wait for the explosion. And you don’t need to wait for too long until a very powerful chorus takes over control and turns the song into a kind of metalcore power ballad. I really don’t know if a description like this exists.
Forgive Me
Now we are back to the harder guitar tunes underlaid with a bit of keyboard. Glanderous, defiant vocals overrule both of them and lead to a softer, nearly reconciling end. What an interesting twist.
Deadline
Again a slow and quiet, nearly whispered beginning. It clearly shows the soft side of SETYØURSAILS. Yes, it exists, even if only for less than minute. Then we are back on the right path, more melodic than metalcore but nevertheless with a powerful alignment.
What’s Wrong
Good question, next question. Nothing is wrong with the next song of the album. There is a strange but not uncomfortable tenderness in it and even the harsh vocals can’t overcome this feeling. I don’t know why, but if my kids were still little girls, this would be their perfect lullaby.
Reason
Wake up again, this would be their alarm clock in the morning. Out of bed, dressed, teeth cleaned, breakfast and ready for school in between ten seconds. Aggressive, demanding, fast and overwhelming melody and vocals rule without forgetting to calm down from time to time. This song wakes up but doesn’t kill.
Fckoff
During the show I saw that mentioned while ago, it was my favourite song which included a sing a long and interaction with the audience. My thoughts about it didn’t change since then. A perfect balance between speed, roughness and aggression. No time for clean vocals, growling rules. I only wasn’t aware that the studio version is just two fulfilled minutes long. But so is “We Will Rock You” of Queen and is recognized as one the best Rock songs ever, so what!
Shallow
This cover song features Mike Perez, well known as vocalist of No Bragging Rights. It is the unofficial metal version of the duet by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper from the film A Star Is Born. It is a good, if not perfect sample how metal can turn an already very good song into perfection. Congratulations Jules and Mike, you have done very well!
What is left to say
I can’t thank Lord Of The Lost enough to invite SETYØURSAILS as support for some gigs of the Blood & Glitter tour. They are a really interesting, promising and fresh band of four sympathetic musicians with a very impressive second album after their already powerful debut with “Enough” in 2018. Jules Mitch’s unique vocal style and personality surely dominates and carries the sound of both albums and the live appearance but it doesn’t make André, Nicolai and Hendrik lesser important musicians of the band.
You can experience SETYØURSAILS live in summer 2023 on some festivals:
Dinkelsbühl, Summer Breeze on Thursday, 17. August
Wolfshagen im Harz, Rock am Beckenrand, Saturday, 26. August
Merseburg, Merseburger Rocknacht, Friday, 1. September
Montabaur, Pell Mell Festival, Saturday, 2. September
Take the chance or you will certainly regret it.
Here is the new video of “Best Of Me”, released in May 2023 as a little bonus. It certainly awakes the appetite for more new music of SETYØURSAILS
