Heavy Halloween 2024 transforms the cozy Froschberghalle in Kirchdorf into a haven of pounding beats, eerie vibes, and unforgettable performances. Despite a disappointingly sparse turnout, the night embodies the power of music to unite—a celebration of both the local community and the wider metal family. With an excellent PA system, outstanding organization by Basilisk and FC Brigachtal, and a lineup of incredible bands, the event deserves a much larger audience.
AstroKing: Galactic Power Metal
The night begins with the interstellar sounds of AstroKing, who travel (or so they say) from the Andromeda galaxy—or perhaps just Berlin. Their dynamic performance, complete with banner-waving and charming banter, captivates early attendees. Their mix of fast-paced power metal and vocal variety is refreshing, as they perform songs like “Greetings From Andromeda”. Despite sound tech hiccups, their chemistry and energy leave the audience smiling.
Scarcrow: Theatrical Halloween Metal
Next, Scarcrow from Donaueschingen channels the spirit of Halloween with theatrical flair. Their set feels like a horror movie brought to life, from Beetlejuice-inspired outfits to haunting skull makeup. The raspy vocals of their frontman echo Lordi and Motörhead, while their crowd interaction—tossing candy to kids—is a heartwarming touch. Songs like “Bat Shit Crazy” and “Welcome To The Family” amp up the spooky ambiance, creating an unforgettable visual and auditory experience.
Basilisk: Community Heroes
Co-organizer Basilisk follows with their signature mix of hauntingly deep female vocals by Michaela “Ela” Kübler and the guttural growls of keyboardist Thomas “Tommy” Adis. Their set included both German and English songs and even a guest duet with former singer Frank Scheuble. Beyond their music, Basilisk’s presence permeates the event as they tirelessly assist behind the scenes, embodying the local, intimate vibe of Heavy Halloween 2024.
Vanish: Progressive Power Metal Fusion
Vanish from Stuttgart brings polished power metal infused with progressive elements. The band’s frontman charms the crowd, joking after their most complex song and later switching to a metal battle vest to symbolize the unity of the metal community. Their shoutout to the Metality organization highlights the spirit of camaraderie present throughout the evening.
Finsterforst: Atmospheric Darkness
Headliners Finsterforst, clad as rugged woodworkers, channel the mystique of the Black Forest. Their music, including the evocative “Mach Dich Frei” (“set yourself free”), blends heavy, atmospheric instrumentals with layered clean, and harsh vocals reminiscent of Turisas. Their haunting set feels like a primal ritual, though some attendees leave early, leaving a smaller but enraptured audience to absorb the immersive performance fully.
Kommando B: Hard Rock Party
Closing the night, cover band Kommando B reignites the party spirit with a set of rock classics, from Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” to Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades.” Their antics—including entering the crowd—create an intimate, high-energy finale. As the clocks shift for winter time, they humorously suggest extending the show by an hour, ensuring Heavy Halloween 2024 ends on a jubilant note.
