Cobra Spell – 666

After two EPs it is now time for the first full length album of this furious meanwhile all female quintet, which already has existed since 2019. Founder and lead guitarist Sonia Anubis and vocalist Kris Vega are maybe the best-known members of Cobra Spell, but all five of them are very experienced and skilled musicians. But we will waste no more time and listen to the first piece of the album now.

666

666

I wouldn’t call it a whole song but the short intro. It starts with synthesizer sounds and I can already imagine, how it will work in a live show with fog, flashes, laser lights as the perfect opener.

S.E.X.

Are you ready to become rough? Welcome to a Rock and Roll party then. Powerful, fast and catchy 80s guitar melody and even catchier vocals make the destination of the album quite clear. And the title of this little strutter speaks for itself…

Satan is a Woman

All hell is breaking loose with this song. The opening riff sounds classic, classic American 80s metal. At all this fantastic song sounds very KISS-alike but with female vocals for the good of it. If Satan really is a woman, now I want to go to hell!

Hotline 666

This hotline is a short interlude only, less than a minute long with synthesizer sounds and a kind of phone call between a woman and a man, if you know what I mean.

Bad Girl Crew

It looks like the interlude’s topic continues because a woman reports about the habits of one of here female friends living in sin. Finest Sleaze Rock catapults me back to the 80s once again. Decide yourself if you like these habits of this bad girl crew. I do.

The Devil Inside of Me

We are back to a satanic topic. It is a modern up-speed song, catchy and harmonic. I wouldn’t call it Power Metal though. It plays in a different, more traditional league. The chorus is ruled by a power choir. Otherwise very fine guitar work once again. I could listen to it tomorrow and tonight.

Fly Away

Can I invite you on a journey? We hear seagulls and a ship’s typhon and we slow down. Let us fly away together with this power ballad. Kris pulls all registers of her clear vocals and the background singers don’t stand back. To me it sounds very inspired by bands like Ann and Nancy Wilson’s Heart. Cobra Spell, take it as an honest compliment.

Love = Love

We remain on the slightly softer side of the band. Nevertheless, it is a guitar dominated song. It builds up slowly in best 80s traditions once again. For a surprise we hear no guitar but a saxophone solo! What a crazy idea and I must confess, it fits like a glove.

Love Crime

For a good crime, you need a gun, in this case a love gun and a scream! The huntress of love chases her prey in this powerful song with very fine guitar solos. I am quite certain that they sound as if both guitarists are sharing the solos in best guitar duo traditions. And then the song simply fades away like a villain after his love crime.

Warrior From Hell

A rough and tough guitar intro, supported by thunderous drums is hotter than hell. This warrior from hell really is a war machine and lets the arrows fly for the Armageddon! Wow, this is a heavy tune! I did not expect it this heavy, it is like a god of thunder and Rock and Roll.

You’re a Cheater

With the first guitar chord, Kris starts singing about her strange feelings about this cheater. This cheater walks very strange ways on dizzy days and Sonia plays her probably most insane guitar solo parts on this stadium anthem.

High on Love

The closer of the album becomes a bit faster. Well, if you are high on love, tonight you belong to me, that’s a very clear message of the song. Catchy guitar riff and the nowadays uncommon sound of a cowbell. This song is so good old 80s!!!

What is left to say?

The whole album 666 is so 80s and certainly relies on the skills of Kris Vega on vocals and Sonia Anubis on lead guitar. It is not a bad thing anyway. Kris’ vocals are outstanding and Sonia’s guitar skills undeniable and she still is so young! Songwriting seems to be based on Sonia’s excellent taste of music and her major influences as a musician. For this reason, there are hints in each of my comments related to her favourite band and you can hear it very clear who it is. Nevertheless, 666 is not a simple copy of all these influences but stands alone for a young, fresh band which will conquer and rule the metal world soon.
